THE RECITAL features baritone Nicholas Meyer, who will perform a set of Schubert art songs inspired by nature. Multifaceted tenor Dan Buchanan will then join Nicholas to perform excerpts from the new opera Two Yosemites by Justin Ralls. The talented Kira Whiting will accompany at the piano. Setting to music “the most famous camping trip in history,” Two Yosemites recreates the remarkable meeting between President Theodore Roosevelt and famous conservationist John Muir. Woven in with the excerpts will be a unique visual presentation, along with special guests.

WHEN & WHERE: Wednesday September 14th, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the historic Old Church located at 1422 S.W. 11th Avenue in Portland, Oregon.

OUR GOAL for this recital is to bring relevant and enjoyable music to all kinds of listeners as well as to promote and raise money for a full production of “Two Yosemites,” scheduled for a world premiere in June, 2017. This means your contribution will go towards more than just the recital but support this groundbreaking project, celebrating our nation’s history and shared natural heritage. Our modest budget for this recital is to cover the costs of renting the space, compensating our artists and documenting the event. Any excess funds will go towards the full production premiering in June, 2017. The budget for the June production is an ambitious $25,000 and we are relying on multiple sources of funding, from grants and corporate sponsors to individual donors like you. We have already received over $9,000 in foundational and in-kind support!

THE OPERA sets to music the meeting between President Theodore Roosevelt and conservationist John Muir on their historic, 1903 camping trip in Yosemite National Park. Arguably the most famous camping trip in history, it marked a pivotal moment in the emergent American Conservation movement to save and protect lands and wildlife from the exploitative impulses of the 19th and 20th Centuries. Presented by Opera Theater Oregon, the fully staged world premiere in June 2017 will include several outdoor and indoor performances with orchestra throughout Portland. Learn more about the opera here.

SUPPORTERS ‘Two Yosemites’ is supported by event partners Portland Audubon and Friends of Hoyt Arboretum and by grants from the Herbert A. Templeton Foundation and the Brookby Foundation.
